My Texas Adventure

Earlier this Year I got to go Austin Texas to sell cleaning sruff. For three weeks it had been nothing but smokers, loud rap music and tiring out from canvasing the area in over 100 degree weather. Texas was nice and so was Washington (I got fired from my Texas job - yeah!) and I'm glad that I gave myself an adventure and something to blog about.

By the way - Samantha's real name is Maria Rita Cortez. My own personal joke. I gave her my heritage and my middle name. 

Rita is my name; I took the "OS" out. Usually I go by Rosa but hey, why not Rita. Plus I have a cousin named Rita - oh well. As for Cortez - mmph. I didn't want to use an English last name because that would be a little narcissistic. 

Samantha's power

As for Sam's fire power. That came from Kings of Leon - Pyro. One day I was on my bed listening to the radio creating a couple of sketches until Pyro played in my ear. A verse in the song came up that I couldn't get out of my head, and so that's when I gave Samantha her fire power. I hate the video but I feel the song. Therefore Samantha is a pyro. A talent that she was born with but can never understand. A curse and a blessing or a really cool way to pop a bag of kernels.

Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket

Cake's short skirt song is the many inspiration why I created Samantha James. I wanted her to define a lot of the song because I see myself self in that song. Maybe if not all then some. You realize that Samantha has a long jacket in her comics - where do you think the idea came from. As for skirts, it's more kilts because I find kilts really cool.

My main character

She's Not There

She's Not There is a new comic strip that I have been working on this entire year. It's about a writer/blogger surviving the everyday life of New York City. The main character Samantha Jameson - real name - Maria Rita Cortez - is a Panamanian American who's a writer, music geek, and introvert. She talks to people but really don't associate herself with a lot of people because that's the ways she is. A 32 year old geek who never been in a relationship, finds comfort in the public library, and is addicted to Facebook, Twitter and other social medium. Samantha don't have a real job just as yet. She's not a slacker - okay in retrospect she is - but she likes to keep herself busy.

All in all Samantha is pretty much me. No. She is me just more hand drawn - but I put my character to the extreme. Like having a fire starter power that I call talent and other geeky things like that.
